| Abstract: Existing studies have shown that the actual construction materials waste level is consistently higher than the estimated wastage level during construction stage. There is limited study on the quantifications of construction materials wastage in Nigerian construction sites. This formed the basis of this paper, which aim is to quantitatively assess construction materials wastage in construction sites with a view to providing background information on allowable percentage of construction materials waste at design stage in order to enhancing construction project delivery. The types of construction waste considered for this study include cutting waste, application waste, transit waste, and theft and vandalism waste. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered on construction professionals and contractors in Abuja municipal, Nigeria. One hundred (100) copies of questionnaire were administered out of which fifty one (51) copies were retrieved and considered for analysis. The data were analyzed using statistical methods of average, percentage and relative significant index (RSI). The result of the findings revealed that theft and vandalism waste ranked highest with overall mean percentage wastage of 16.58% followed by cutting waste with 15.44% while transit waste and application waste ranked third and fourth with 15.31% and 13.93% respectively. The study concluded that construction materials wastage was accounted for an average of 15.32% in the Nigerian construction sites. Therefore the study recommended 15-20% allowance for any types of construction materials waste in Nigeria. |
